1980: The stars of INRIA

The ROBOSOFT story began in the early 80s at INRIA, where a research team developed its first autonomous mobile robot. The research team's aim was to demonstrate vision-guided robots. For real demonstrations, the team built a mobile platform from an electric wheelchair. This platform became the robot a few years later, ROBOSOFT's first generic product.

1986: RobuTER

In 1986, ROBOSOFT began selling robuTER, one of the very first mobile robots dedicated to research and development. Since then, several hundred units have been manufactured and sold worldwide, and some of the first robots are still in service. With a high payload capacity (several hundred kg), the robot was a highly reliable piece of equipment, with advanced programming capabilities thanks to its ALBATROS operating system. Its success was due to its flexibility, enabling users to install any type of payload and efficiently develop on-board and off-board software for demonstrations. The robot has made a major contribution to the development of mobile robotics.

1987: Cleaning robot

Thanks to an early partnership with GSF, a major cleaning services provider, the possibility of using robots to clean floors was introduced in September 1986 (ISIR Robotex, Brussels, Belgium). The prototype was a robot equipped with a hoover and controlled remotely by a human operator.

1988: AutoVacC

In 1988, still in partnership with GSF, we presented AutoVaC 2, the first prototype of a genuine industrial robotic hoover. It was first shown at Robots 12 (Detroit Mi) in June 1988. The main feature of AutovacC2 was automatic navigation using vacuum odometry. Ultrasonic sensors were used for obstacle detection and the first autonomous navigation algorithms enabled simple teach-by-display missions. But we discovered at this stage that odometry was not sufficient for accurate navigation.

1991: Cleaning research

In the early 90s, we did a lot of work on improving the cleaning process for floor-cleaning robots. Together with our partner GSF, we developed several prototypes and combinations of cleaning tools to be robotised, such as optimised battery-powered hoovers, intelligent squeegees or combinations of brushes and hoovers. These developments have greatly helped in the design of more efficient floor cleaning robots and have given our engineers an in-depth knowledge of robotic cleaning.

1992: OSCAR

he first prototype filling robot, called OSCAR, was developed in the early 90s in cooperation with STAB and SEMVAT, the bus operators in Bayonne and Toulouse. This first robot operated for several years before being replaced by the MK4 and MK5 models.

1994: AutoWIND

Lancé en 1994, le programme AutoWIND, soutenu par la Commission européenne, avait pour objectif de développer un prototype de plate-forme opérationnelle suspendue par câble, destinée aux tâches de nettoyage et de maintenance des vitres actuellement effectuées par des travailleurs humains. L’objectif principal du projet était de démontrer la faisabilité de robots pour le nettoyage des fenêtres. Les développements mécaniques de base ont abouti à une plate-forme adaptative sophistiquée à base de capteurs pour la stabilisation, l’adhérence et la mobilité de l’unité de nettoyage autonome sur la surface en verre du bâtiment.
